The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are still celebrating in the Football Transfer Tavern…
The Blues were very impressive on Sunday, as Antonio Conte’s side stood firm and beat Tottenham 2-1 at Wembley. Marcos Alonso was, undoubtedly, the star of the show – with the Spaniard picking up both of Chelsea’s goals on the day.
Indeed, it was an evening of celebration for the Blues – but Antonio Conte likely spent the rest of his day pondering how to improve his Chelsea side. There was a gulf between the substitutes available to each side, with the Blues having to rely on a mix of youth and experience – whilst Tottenham called upon big names like Son Heung-min and Moussa Sissoko.
Conte’s side was able to quell the negative energy surrounding the club, but the hard work is still to come. There is a real need for more depth at Stamford Bridge, and according to the Mirror, Conte has been given his wish to get it.
The Mirror reports that Antonio Conte has given Chelsea the green light to sign Inter Milan winger Antonio Candreva. Rated at £25 million, it appears as though a move will be forthcoming from the Blues.
A natural wide man, it seems likely that Candreva will feature in the Victor Moses role at Stamford Bridge, using his work rate to attack and defend in equal measure down the right-hand side of the Chelsea defence.
At 30-years-old, Candreva’s signing would mark a change in tactic from the Blues, with focus typically falling upon younger players with higher talent ceilings – but Conte clearly wants proven quality.
A seasoned Italy international, Candreva is a consistent and talented midfielder, and Conte will undoubtedly be able to get the best out of him at Stamford Bridge.
Any depth is good depth at present, with Chelsea desperately needing more bodies.
