The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are excited to see Chelsea’s new-look defence this season…
The Blues have signed Antonio Rudiger and brought Andreas Christensen back from a spell on loan, leaving Antonio Conte with a host of exciting options at the back.
Despite Chelsea’s defence looking strong, it appears as though Conte wants to improve it even more, with the Times reporting that the Blues are preparing a huge £50 million move for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk. The publication reports that Conte has identified the defender as a key target, and he has now managed to convince the Blues’ board to make a move for him.
Van Dijk has, of course, been out of action for the last few months having suffered an injury mid-way through last season, but looks set to return to action over the coming campaign. Where he plays his football, though, remains unclear.
What is clear, though, is that Chelsea are keen to land him, and Antonio Conte seemingly views him as key target this summer.
The move would certainly be an interesting one as it would make at least one of Chelsea’s current crop of defenders in with a chance of being sold. With Azpilicueta, Cahill and Luiz in addition to Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger all vying for three starting spots, there may not be enough room for them all to stay. Given Chelsea’s history, our landlord thinks that Christensen may be forced to make way.
Still, van Dijk isn’t the sort of player that you can turn down if the opportunity to sign him arises, and if Conte wants to win trophies and titles, he needs players like the Dutchman.
