For the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, Antonio Conte’s legacy could be defined by whether or not he manages to bring any young players through at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea managers have had increasingly short tenures at the club, and with no real time to build a dynasty, they are often remembered by other things. Now, more than ever, there is a desire amongst fans to see young talent come through and develop in the first team.
Antonio Conte has shown a desire to do just that over the last few months, with a number of young players getting their chance. Players like Charly Musonda and Jake Clarke-Salter have been involved on occasion, but nobody has been able to really break through. Antonio Conte, though, seemingly views one player as having a real chance.
According to the official Chelsea website, he said: “My experience at Juventus with Paul Pogba, he was only 18 years old and then after one month he played from the start. I want to give this possibility but you have to deserve it”.
He continued: “[Ethan] Amapdu, for example, is a player who is only 17 years old but he deserves to stay with us and develop and be the future of Chelsea”.
Paul Pogba’s success over the last few years has been phenomenal, and as Conte says, he was the manager that gave the Frenchman his chance in the first team. That didn’t happen overnight, though, and so it’s going to take time. Clearly, however, Antonio Conte wants to emulate that success with Ampadu – and that is great news for the Blues.
Ampadu has looked very good when given a chance at Stamford Bridge, and so he definitely has a bright future.
That’s not to say that he will be the next Paul Pogba, but Conte is clearly a great judger of talent, and he seemingly feels as though Ampadu has that natural talent. It’s certainly an exciting time to be a Chelsea fan.
In an ironic twist, Man Utd are now the benefactors of Conte’s hard work with Pogba, and he won’t want to see a similar course of events with Ampadu.
