The Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern have been the subject of ridicule from all angles after rivals Manchester United swooped to land Everton striker Romelu Lukaku from under their nose at the last hour, having looked nailed on for a Stamford Bridge return.
While our resident Blues fans still try to figure out just how the powers that be in west London let such a deal happen, we have some news from the continent which could well cheer them up.
According to reports from Spanish outlet AS, the Blues are preparing a club-record shattering offer of €80m (around £70m) for former United target Alvaro Morata, in a deal which would eclipse the fee paid to bring Morata’s compatriot Fernando Torres to the club from Liverpool.
The Red Devils are reportedly no longer interested in a move for the wantaway Galactico, leaving the door open for Antonio Conte to move in and bring some cheer back to the Blues fans.
However, while United are now out of the equation, Los Blancos are supposedly still holding out for another €10m on top of what the Premier League champions are prepared to offer, this could take a while.
