The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have had enough of Pedro being in the Chelsea squad. Though he impressed last season, it’s fair to say that most of his career in London has been underwhelming at best.
The Spaniard, formerly of Barcelona, has rarely been able to dominate games like most had expected, and this season Willian has taken precedence over him with regards to regular first-team action. For a player that was a key part of a Barcelona team that won so many trophies, he’s hardly been a shining star for Chelsea.
In the summer, then, especially given that he will be 31-years-old by the time next season rolls around, it might be time to replace him.
Despite his poor form, he’s still an important and regularly used member of the squad, and so the Blues need to bring in someone excellent in his place. One player that could be a good option is Marseille’s Lucas Ocampos, who is rated at £6.75m by Transfer Markt.
Ocampos has had a bit of nomadic career over the years, but after a few loan spells, he has finally settled in the Marseille first team.
Known for his dribbling, decent pace and technique, he’s a real menace going forward, able to make defenders dizzy with his mazy runs and runs towards goal. He’s scored 9 goals and picked up 2 assists this season, which when you compare with just 4 goals on Pedro’s part, indicates that he has been far more effective this term.
At 23-years-old, he’s also only just starting his career, with many of his best years still ahead of him. Naturally, then, replacing Pedro with him makes sense in the context of long-term planning.
For Chelsea, a move for Ocampos has little downside, and if Chelsea truly want to rebuild after a struggling season, Pedro should be one of the first names on the chopping block.
