Following comments from the Spaniard, Diego Costa looks set to leave Chelsea this summer, but Antonio Conte should think twice before making that decision…
After all, despite criticism, the Spaniard has had a fantastic season for the Blues. In the first few games of the campaign, it was Costa that kept Chelsea afloat, whilst his regular goalscoring throughout the rest of the season ensured that the wins kept on coming for the Blues. At times, of course, he struggled, as any forward would – but for the most part, he was an excellent front man.
It is very hard to suggest that anyone coming into the side to replace him would be able to improve it. 20 goals last season is a mightily impressive record, but Costa’s gameplay goes far beyond his record. He is strong, powerful and an excellent target man – all traits that go ignored. Another player might come in and be more flamboyant and technical – but Costa’s playstyle gets results.
Seemingly, the alternative for Chelsea is Romelu Lukaku. He is, of course, a great forward in his own right – but it is very hard to argue that he is a better player than Costa. So much work that Diego Costa does goes unnoticed, whilst Lukaku has a number of traits to his game that are questionable. Against Chelsea, so many teams choose to sit back and defend, and given that Lukaku’s main attribute is his ability to run off the shoulder – the Belgian really wouldn’t fit in that system.
Conte clearly has made a decision on the matter, and Chelsea fans need to trust him. But first, Conte needs to make sure that he has made the right decision, and if he is to sell Costa, he needs to replace him adequately.
