Conte tells Chelsea board that he wants 25-year-old this summer – report

The Transfer Tavern is bustling with excitement ahead of the new season….

The Chelsea fans, though, are being comparably quiet, with nobody in the pub quite sure how the Blues are going to get on this season.

Sure, their squad is still largely the same as the one that won the Premier League last season, but with a couple of key departures alongside sides like Man City and Man Utd improving their teams dramatically, Chelsea are an unknown quantity this season.

Whilst a lack of progress so far has disheartened supporters, they are still optimistic that a few more signings could be made, and according to Spanish publication Sport, they could be right. Sport are reporting that Antonio Conte has confirmed to the Chelsea board that he wants to sign Sergi Roberto this summer, with the Italian wanting his side to contact FC Barcelona regarding a move.

A versatile defender and midfielder, the 25-year-old has impressed for Barcelona in recent years, but his place in the first team is far from certain. The Catalan giants’ squad is full of talent, and Roberto is by no means a guaranteed starter at the club.

Conte could well look to tempt him with the offer of regular game time at Stamford Bridge, whilst there is no doubting that he would go on to play a key role for the Blues.

Landlord’s Verdict

The main benefit to signing Roberto is his ability to play in a number of positions. He is very efficient both in midfield and in defence, having spent a lot of time as a right-back recently.

With Victor Moses Chelsea’s only real option in that role at present, Roberto would certainly give the Nigerian a run for his money, and his form over the last year or so would certainly give him a real chance of starting.

He won’t be a cheap signing, but Conte clearly rates him, and it’s clear to see where he would fit in.
