Conte: This player will have a bigger role than anticipated at Chelsea this season

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern can’t wait to see Tiemoue Bakayoko in a Chelsea shirt…

Unfortunately, the Frenchman has been unable to feature thus far as he is still recovering from an injury picked up prior to his move, but a return is certainly edging closer.

Brought in for big money, he was expected to come in and be an immediate starter at Stamford Bridge, but according to Antonio Conte, that wasn’t the plan.

Discussing the Frenchman via the Evening Standard, Conte reportedly said: “My idea was to give Bakayoko the right time to adapt in this league behind Matic. But now after the sale of Matic, we need to try to accelerate this process for Bakayoko after his injury”.

Conte appears to be suggesting that the role played by Bakayoko this year was intended to be a relatively minor one, typically playing second fiddle to Nemanja Matic as he adjusted to the English league. Of course, English football is far more physical and demanding than most other top divisions, and so he will certainly need an adjustment period.

However, now, with the sale of Matic and a lack of depth in general, Bakayoko is instead going to have to play more of a regular role – though the fans in the Transfer Tavern aren’t complaining. They can’t wait to see him in action.

Landlord’s Verdict

Bakayoko had a fantastic season last year, but the Premier League is an entirely different beast. Long spells of adjustment are typically required, and so it isn’t ideal to be thrown in at the deep end.

Unfortunately, Conte has little choice, and unless Chelsea bring in a Premier League veteran, that is going to be a problem for the next few months regardless.

Still, Bakayoko is a top player, and he should be able to adapt relatively quickly. It’s clear, though, that the transition would have been far easier with Matic involved.
