The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern still haven’t gotten over their side’s loss in the Community Shield against Arsenal…
The Blues have had a tough pre-season, and following that defeat, the mood amongst fans has really suffered a downturn.
However, it appears as though positivity is on the horizon, with a recent report from the Telegraph offering reason for optimism at Stamford Bridge. Matt Law of the Telegraph writes that Chelsea are ready to back Antonio Conte with investment before the summer is out, with a move for Serge Aurier – who is rated at £27 million – reportedly being considered behind the scenes.
A move for Virgil van Dijk is also being mooted, but the important thing to note here is that the Chelsea brass seemingly recognises the problems at Stamford Bridge and they look ready to fix them. A move for Aurier would certainly be a good start, but there is more hard work to come over the coming weeks.
Chelsea looked a shadow of their former selves in the Community Shield, with Antonio Conte’s side lucky to go 1-0 up in the second-half. In truth, Arsenal were good value for their win.
Still, there is time for the Blues to improve, and Conte looks likely to get backed over the coming weeks.
Serge Aurier would be a great signing for the Blues, with the defender easily one of Europe’s most talented right-backs. He has had disciplinary problems in the past, but if anyone can turn him around it is Antonio Conte.
There is far more needed at Chelsea than just the Ivorian, though. Chelsea lack depth up and down the pitch, with more investment needed in defence, midfield and even attack before the summer is out.
Words are relatively meaningless at this point – Antonio Conte needs action.
