The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were hoping for a few more major signings over the summer…
The lack of European football in the 2016/17 campaign meant that Antonio Conte could get away with only utilising a very small group of players. Thus, a lack of squad depth wasn’t a particularly big problem.
It was recognised ahead of this season, though, that something had to change – with the return of the Champions League likely to heavily impact upon the overall fitness of Chelsea’s limited squad.
As a result, big players like Davide Zappacosta, Danny Drinkwater and Alvaro Morata were all brought to Stamford Bridge in an effort to solve that problem, and they’ve certainly helped. A few more wouldn’t have gone a miss, though.
If Antonio Conte had his wish, perhaps another player would have moved to Stamford Bridge. Fernando Llorente moved to Tottenham over the summer, but according to the Express, he has revealed that he was close to a move to Chelsea.
Llorente said: “The truth is that Chelsea have been after me for a long time but at the end you know how this works”
He added: “At the very last minute, Pochettino called me and convinced me”.
This could come back to bite Chelsea as the season progresses.
Antonio Conte has a bit of a problem now, given his lack of options up front.
Fortunately, though, Alvaro Morata has made a great start to life at Chelsea, and so if he can stay fit and keep scoring, he could be all Chelsea need this season.
However, it would be wise for Conte to look at signing a new forward in January if he can.
