West Ham United supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are still buzzing over the opening weekend win at Arsenal, but reports from Sky Sports surrounding their possible latest signing seems to have somewhat split opinion amongst fans.
Controversial midfielder and Twitter addict Joey Barton is understood to be holding further talks with Hammers coach Slaven Bilic.
The 32-year-old was one of six players released by QPR following their relegation from the Premier League, and Barton has since been training and undergoing fitness tests at Upton Park.
Bilic is keen to add some Premier League experience to a midfield that impressed during the opening weekend win over Arsenal, with 16-year-old Reece Oxford excelling in that defensive role.
The Hammers have been linked with Barton previously, and were set to sign him during the summer of 2012.
Barton wrecked his chances of a move to Upton Park however by getting sent off on the final day of that season for kicking Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero, a move which prompted Hammers co-owner David Gold to tweet: “We couldn’t sign J Barton even if we wanted to as he will probably be banned for a long time after his disgraceful behaviour.”
Our resident Hammers fans here in the Tavern are feeling this would be a step backwards, with the landlord saying, “How can you go from Dimitri Payet, to Joey Barton? Madness.”
