Newcastle United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are split with their opinions on the story from the Newcastle Chronicle, which reports that controversial midfielder and Twitter loudmouth Joey Barton would like to return to the club one day.
But as expected with Barton, it is not that straightforward, with the current free agent saying he would only consider a return to St James’ Park if the club’s approach changes.
Barton played for the Toon Army between 2007 and 2011, but left the club are falling out with the board – shock.
At the time he was vocal in his criticism of club officials, tweeting “One day the board might realise, what the shirt signifies. HONOUR and PRIDE. Thanks for your continued support………..toonarmy.”
The 32-year-old is yet to sign with a new club, and with the start of the new season just two days away, Barton has hinted at a return to the club at which he made 84 appearances.
Speaking during a Twitter question and answer session (where else?) Barton confirmed he would consider making a return to St James’ Park – if his conditions were met.
When asked if he would ever consider rejoining Newcastle he replied: “Everyday and twice on a Sunday, IF and only IF the powers that be changed their approach to the club.”
A plethora of Newcastle United supporting punters here in the Transfer Tavern feel this would be step backwards for the club, and feel they should avoid Barton at all costs!
