The punters in the Football Transfer Tavern never learn; they always get carried away and believe every single rumour that Tom, Dick and Harry tells them.
Last summer, we had Arsenal supporting customers rocking up in shirts with Liverpool’s Luis Suarez’s name on the back. We also had Liverpool regulars with Willian splased across their backs – something this one Chelsea punter just won’t let go (my landlord says he is one more comment away from being barred).
This sort of thing happens every transfer window and you can’t help but laugh. The best thing is when the fans that have been premature with their name choice for their shirt still wear the totally inaccurate item.
For example, ever since the worst kept secret in football was waiting to be announced – that Louis van Gaal will be named Manchester United’s new boss – these two Spurs punters refused to accept it and were adamant that the 62-year-old was going to be working at White Hart Lane.
However, now the Red Devils have announced the Dutchman’s arrival, these two are still remaining defiant…
