Thibaut Courtois hasn’t been good enough this season, and that has been a real sticking point for the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern. Tasked with replacing Petr Cech long-term, the Belgian has looked great at points, but a lack of consistency has really been a problem for the Blues.
In particular, a poor performance against Barcelona at the Nou Camp turned many fans off of him, with the Belgian letting two strikes slip through his legs on the night.
Rumours from RMC Sport suggesting that he’s open to a departure, then, haven’t gone down too well in the Transfer Tavern. According to the publication, he’s interested in a move to PSG this summer. Clearly, Chelsea may have a decision to make regarding his future, and our landlord thinks that they should sell him and buy Gianluigi Donnarumma as a replacement.
Donnarumma, who is rated at £36 million by Transfer Markt, has been a rising star over in Italy over the last few years, and given his youth and nationality, our resident Italian experts have touted him as the next Gigi Buffon. That’s some pressure on his shoulders, but on the pitch, he certainly looks good enough.
Standing at a towering 6ft4, the Italian is a real sight to behold between the sticks. He’s able to get up brilliantly from set pieces, whilst he’s also able to use his frame to cover each end of the goal. His size doesn’t inhibit his movement, though, with the 19-year-old as agile as they come.
He’s also a brilliant shot-stopper, and that is where Courtois has fallen short as of late.
The teenager is still, of course, a developing player, but right now, his ceiling looks every bit as high as Courtois’ – and you could even argue that he has the potential to be even better.
For Chelsea, then, replacing Courtois with Donnarumma may be the perfect progression as they look to move into a new era of domination.
