The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned about the future of Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian has just one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, and with no suggestion of an impending renewal, there is certainly a chance that he could leave the club this summer.
After all, if Chelsea don’t sell this summer, they’re risking losing him on a free at the end of next season, and that’s something they can’t afford to do.
Replacing the Belgian, though, will surely be crossing the minds of the Blues’ brass.
One player that could be perfect for that role is Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland, who is rated at £16.2 million by Transfer Markt.
Recently relegated with his current team, perhaps Butland will be open to the prospect of a departure this summer, and with Stoke City set to lose out on a decent chunk of change following their relegation, perhaps they’ll be keen to sell one of the more expensive players within their squad.
Butland has been one of the Premier League’s better goalkeepers over the last few years, having emerged during his early twenties. He’s had a few injury problems over the years, but on his day he’s quite the shot-stopper.
Brilliantly mobile, excellently agile and generally very consistent, Butland has been a shining light in an underwhelming Stoke City team this season.
As a homegrown talent, Butland will be particularly useful to Chelsea, given their need to hit quotas in English football. They’re short on talented homegrown players, and so he will would do more than just be a fantastic option for the team.
A great player for the present and the future, Butland could be the perfect man to replace Courtois.
