With Manchester United having already spent over £50M this summer, due to the acquisitions of Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David De Gea, the United hierarchy can be forgiven for being slightly tentative with anymore expenditure.
Although a deal for Wesley Sneijder is not improbable, Inter Milan’s high asking price, as well as the player’s wage demands, may prove too much for United at the current time.
A new target may have emerged for the Reds however, in the form of Nicolas Gaitan. The young Argentinian, although most often deployed as a left winger, can also play in the middle, and as with Sneijder, would be seen as a like for like replacement for the recently retired Paul Scholes.
He performed well for Benfica last season, in what was his first season playing outside of Argentina, and the midfielder looks to have made the transition successfully. This is highlighted by the fact the youngster contributed with both goals and assists in quantity during his debut season.
If reports in Itasportpress are to be believed, then Sir Alex may be able to get his man for as little as €11M, a far cheaper solution than Sneijder, and would be joining a midfield already boosted by the arrival of Young.
