With Derby County confirming they have given Chelsea permission to speak to Frank Lampard, the 41-year-old looks to be on the verge of becoming the next Blues boss.
And if that does turn out to be the case, one former Chelsea player believes the legendary midfielder must turn to Alvaro Morata for the new Premier League season. Take a look at his full verdict in this edition of our Pundit’s Choice feature.
“If we think they can’t sign anybody, if we presume the situation stays as it is, I think strangely enough the first port of call has to be [Morata],” Craig Burley said on ESPN FC (via Daily Express).
“Now, I know it’s complicated with Atletico Madrid and the player himself and he probably doesn’t want to come back to London. But you’re only other option, with Higuain going back to his parent club, is Olivier Giroud.
“So you’ve got to say: ‘look, played for Real Madrid, played for Juventus, played in Champions League finals, led the line for Spain. He’s better than what we saw, absolutely 100 per cent.”
With Giroud scoring just two goals in the Premier League last season and Tammy Abraham’s best football coming in the Championship (48 goals in 78 Championship appearances as per Transfermarkt), it is not hard to understand Burley’s thinking here.
That being said, the Morata ship has surely sailed. Like Giroud, the 26-year-old has also had his struggles in a blue shirt, often getting caught offside during his time in England. Before leaving for Atletico Madrid in January, he averaged 1.3 offsides per game in the Premier League. To put that into perspective, only Burnley’s Chris Wood was a worse offender with 1.4 (as per WhoScored).
Factor in the fact that the Spain international does not want to return to London and this just looks like even more of a no-go.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
