With Vincent Kompany leaving Manchester City for Anderlecht, Pep Guardiola could dip into the transfer market to sign a new central defender.
And one name that refuses to go away is Harry Maguire, with Sky Sports reporting that both Manchester City and their rivals Manchester United want to sign the 26-year-old.
Given his importance to Leicester City, it could be a very expensive transfer. But for one former pro, it would be worth it.
“Would he be a good fit alongside somebody like [Aymeric] Laporte, right and left? Absolutely,” Craig Burley told ESPN FC.
“City are looking for people who are not frightened to take chances because that is what City do, and that’s what’s been successful for them.”
In that regard, indeed, Maguire looks a perfect fit for a side like Manchester City. As highlighted by Sky Sports’ Gerard Brand, the England international is extremely comfortable in possession and is not one to shy away from bringing the ball out of defence.
But amid everything that is said about his ball-playing ability, it is important to remember that Maguire is also a very good defender.
Last season, the Leicester man won 3.8 aerial duels per game in the Premier League, putting him out in front of Laporte (2.2), John Stones (2.5) and Nicolas Otamendi (2.2) (as per WhoScored). So, if Guardiola wants to add more of an aerial presence to his defence, as well as another talented ball-playing centre-half, then Maguire is his man.
Against Manchester City, most teams are forced to go direct, with the Citizens’ 1-0 win versus Burnley back in April being a perfect example.
Put someone as aerially dominant as Maguire in the team and there would not even be a point.
