The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been able to watch some of Europe’s best strut their stuff at White Hart Lane over the years, but all too often, they’ve been sold on before they can truly reach their potential in a white shirt.
That’s certainly the case for Luka Modric, who was sold to Real Madrid in 2012.
The creative midfielder was never really replaced by the club, and whilst players like Mousa Dembele have done a job as deep-lying playmakers, it’s evident that something else could be needed.
Tottenham, then, in their hunt to find a true successor to Modric, should turn to PSG star Marco Verratti, who is rated at £63 million by Transfer Markt.
Verratti, like Modric, is a master with the ball at his feet. A technical genius, he’s able to manipulate the ball in ways that most can only dream of. In particular, he’s a brilliant passer of the ball, and so in that sense, he’d be a brilliant successor to Verratti.
Furthermore, he’s also a very hard worker, and that allows him to be a threat both going forward and more defensively. Not to mention, like Modric, his tackling isn’t too bad – though it isn’t his strongest suit – and so he’s useful when looking to break up play.
He also brings other traits, like a fiery personality that often makes him a terror in the midfield for the opposition, that add to his game, but for Spurs, the role that he could play as a deep-lying playmaker would be sensational.
Of course, he won’t be cheap, but Spurs are at a period in which they could truly go to the next level. In Verratti, they would find the perfect ladder to that.
