Unai Emery would be wise to target a new left-back when the January transfer window opens.

The Spaniard has been forced to use Granit Xhaka on the left of defence at times this season when both Sead Kolasinac and Nacho Monreal were sidelined. Despite the Bosnian returning to full fitness, doubts remain over Monreal’s long-term future at the club. The Spaniard is approaching the twilight of his playing career, and Emery would be wise to target a long-term replacement to complete Arsenal’s back four.

One man he must be keeping tabs on is Fiorentina full-back Cristiano Biraghi.

Valued at just £6.75m by Transfermarkt, the left-back joined the club permanently in the summer from Pescara for a little over £1m after spending a season on loan with La Viola. Since moving to the Serie A side, Biraghi has gone from strength-to-strength and earned his first call-up to the senior Italy national side as a result of his impressive showings.

The former Inter Milan defender has been a crucial player during his 11 Serie A appearances so far, helping his side’s cause with one goal and two assists so far. Biraghi also chipped in with a goal for Italy during their UEFA Nations League game against Poland to secure a 1-0 win back in October. The defender loves to contribute to the attack and has completed an impressive 1.9 crosses and 1.5 key passes per game this season which could mean even more goals for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the attack. The 26-year-old doesn’t neglect his defensive duties though and reads the game expertly, averaging 2.1 interceptions per game this season (WhoScored).

Unsurprisingly, both Inter and AC Milan have shown an interest in his services according to reports, but the Gunners must ensure they beat the Italian giants to his signature.
