Manchester City look set to face a very interesting conclusion to the transfer window after missing out on Jorginho. Despite recent murmurs from the club which suggest they will make use of their current resources rather than signing an alternative to the Italy international, it seems incredibly plausible that they will splash the cash on a central midfield talent of proven quality before the window slams shut.

The signing of a new central midfield player to eventually succeed Fernandinho in City's anchor role has been on the agenda for quite some time, but after months of speculation they remain without a significant acquisition to report.

But that could be all set to change before the new season gets underway, as according to Sportmediaset City have moved into pole position for the signing of Miralem Pjanic, with the club willing to splurge 100 million euros (£89 million) in order to secure his services.

If those reports do indeed prove to be true then City supporters could be in for an absolute treat next season, but Cristiano Ronaldo could yet spoil City's party by convincing the Bosnian to stay at Juventus this summer.

The former Red Devil is far from popular with the Citizens faithful, but he could become a figure of increased hatred if he prevents City from signing a dream replacement for Fernandinho this summer.

According to the report, Ronaldo's recent arrival in Turin is a huge factor which Pjanic is expected to take into consideration this summer as he weighs up a move to the Etihad Stadium.

And considering Ronaldo is one of the greatest players to ever grace the footballing world, it's easy to sympathise with Pjanic's predicament ahead of the new season.

The prospect of linking up with Ronaldo in the famous black and white stripes traditionally donned by the Old Lady is a mouth-watering one for Pjanic to look forward to ahead of the new season, and the exciting vision of the future at Juventus with the Portugal legend spearheading the attack could ultimately prove too promising for him to walk away from.

There are very few players in world football who can single-handedly dictate proceedings from the centre of midfield like Pjanic so Guardiola's interest is certainly well-placed, but Ronaldo's recent transfer will almost certainly provide him with an unmovable obstacle in his pursuit during the final weeks of the transfer window.
