Crystal Palace aim to snap-up Championship defender

Arsenal v Cardiff City - Barclays Premier LeagueThe Crystal Palace regulars in the Transfer Tavern are discussing the latest reports circulating the bar that have revealed one of their potential targets during the January transfer window.

According to the Telegraph, Crystal Palace boss, Alan Pardew, is keen to secure the services of central defender, Steven Caulker, in order to bolster his defensive options.

Caulker is currently on a season-long loan to Southampton but has only managed to make one Premier League start for the Saints so far. And Alan Pardew is among the clubs interested in ending Caulker’s disappointing loan spell and giving him a fresh opportunity at a different club.

Along with Palace, Caulker’s lack of action has alerted several other clubs to the young Englishman’s potential availability.

However, Southampton, Queens Park Rangers and Caulker himself would all have to agree to cancel his current loan spell at the Saints if he wished to make a move this month, as it is believed that there is no get-out clause in his current agreement.

The 24-year-old was arguably one of the highest-rated defenders during his time at Tottenham Hotspur but since leaving White Hart Lane, he has not yet managed to fulfil his potential.

With Palace slipping to a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea due to their defensive option’s shortcomings, Pardew will likely be one of the busier managers during this transfer window.

QPR will demand approximately £5m if Caulker was to permanently part ways with the club but it could be money well spent come the end of the transfer window.
