Arsenal are said to be considering offering Crystal Palace at least one player in their next offer for Wilfried Zaha.
According to the Evening Standard, the north London club are planning to return with another bid, but remain in a very unfavourable position due to their £40m transfer budget, which is half the amount Zaha’s side are thought to want.
As a result, Arsenal could now offer the Eagles cash plus a player, with Carl Jenkinson, Mohamed Elneny and Shkodran Mustafi the names being considered.
Clearly crippled by their transfer budget, it is a logical move from Arsenal’s perspective. But it will probably not change Crystal Palace’s stance, and it is not hard to understand why.
Simply put, neither player is going to set Selhurst Park alight or vastly improve Roy Hodgson’s team.
While the Eagles need a right-back following Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s move to Manchester United, Jenkinson would be a fairly underwhelming replacement. Back in the 2017/18 season at Birmingham City, the last campaign where Jenkinson was able to make more than five league appearances, he averaged just 0.6 interceptions per game in the Championship (as per WhoScored).
When you consider Wan-Bissaka averaged 2.4 last term, in a division with stronger attackers including the likes of Eden Hazard, Raheem Sterling and Sadio Mane, the above is lacklustre to say the least.
As for Elneny and Mustafi, the duo are hardly an upgrade on anything Crystal Palace currently have. For example, Elneny’s key passes per game (0.6) were less than Luka Milivojevic’s 1.6, James McArthur’s 0.8 and Max Meyer’s 0.8. As far as creativity goes anyway, the Egyptian would not be an improvement on any of the previously mentioned names.
Meanwhile, Mustafi just looks like a poor idea in general.
“He’s been a mess since he joined the club really and this is another example of it. He’s at fault for the second goal as well,” Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports (via Daily Mirror) following the Germany international’s role in his side’s 3-2 defeat to Crystal Palace in April.
When you consider all of that, Crystal Palace would have to be mad to entertain any proposal for Zaha that includes Jenkinson, Elneny or Mustafi moving to Selhurst Park.
