It is fair to say Newcastle supporters have not been spoilt for choice with top centre halves in recent years, but supporters here in the Football Transfer Tavern are all in agreement that Fabio Coloccini has been by far and away the best in that department up at St James’ Park.
Which is why the latest reports from the Daily Mail have got Toon fans concerned, with former boss Alan Pardew reportedly looking to lure the Argentine to south London and Crystal Palace.
Coloccini has just one year remaining on his contract in the north East, and Pardew is quietly confident of luring his former captain.
However new Newcastle boss Steve McClaren is desperate to keep the 33-year-old at St James’ Park.
‘I have stressed how much I want him here,’ he said.
‘I know there has been a lot of speculation but I said he’s a big part of this football club.
‘To be part of the team and the squad. I’ve expressed that to him and the club. There has been no official approach from anybody and I hope Colo will be training with us next week.
‘He has been training intermittently and we wanted him to play more games.
‘We’ve not risked him. We would have liked to have got some minutes today but I think he is probably now got a full week with us and he is read to train with the team.’
A number of Toon fans over by the pool table here in the Football Transfer Tavern are not happy with this news, with mosyt of them feeling that the Argentine defender is pivotal to the club’s backline.
Meanwhile, Palace fans here in the Tavern admit they would love to see this move happen, and feel that his experience would help enhance the quality of the squad ten-fold.
