Crystal Palace are reportedly set to step up their interest in bringing Michy Batshuayi back to Selhurst Park.
The 25-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at the south London club from Chelsea and, according to The Times, they will now turn their attention to securing his services again after agreeing a £2.5m deal for Jordan Ayew.
Like Batshuayi, Ayew also spent the previous campaign on loan at Selhurst Park but is now set to join permanently from Swansea City.
Following his successful loan spell with the Eagles last season, Batshuayi would surely be a welcome addition this summer.
Despite only joining in January, the Belgian finished the campaign as Crystal Palace’s fourth highest goalscorer in all competitions with six goals.
During his short stint, Batshuayi also displayed his confidence as a No.9. He averaged 2.5 shots per game in the Premier League — more than any other Crystal Palace player — showing his willingness to test the goalkeeper (as per WhoScored).
Roy Hodgson, though, would be silly to put all of his eggs in one basket here. And with the transfer window closing in a month, perhaps it is time to move on altogether.
It was back in May when Hodgson confirmed that he wanted Batshuayi to remain at Selhurst Park yet nothing has really happened since then.
Meanwhile, the words of Chelsea’s new boss Frank Lampard are hardly reassuring either.
“Everybody has an opportunity. I have no pre-conceived ideas about anybody, I have got good knowledge of the squad but I need to see them over the next month,” Lampard was quoted as saying by Sky Sports when discussing his first-team plans for the new season.
Bearing that in mind, Batshuayi, who is currently a part of Lampard’s pre-season squad, could be brought back in from the cold, meaning Crystal Palace need to seriously start evaluating some other options.
