Crystal Palace: Eagles keen on summer deal for Charlie Austin - Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace are interested in Southampton striker Charlie Austin but face competition from three other teams.

That is according to The Sun, who report that as well as the south London club, Aston Villa, Fulham and West Brom are also keen on signing the 29-year-old this summer in an £8m deal.

Southampton are said to be open to the idea of selling Austin this transfer window, and a four-way transfer tussle for his signature now looks to be on the horizon.

From Crystal Palace’s perspective, though, the Premier League outfit surely have to be aiming a tad higher, especially considering they had a No.9 of Michy Batshuayi’s calibre among their ranks, albeit on loan.

Scoring five goals in 757 league minutes compared to Austin‘s two strikes in 981 league minutes, Batshuayi was clearly the superior striker last season. He also took more shots per game at 2.5 to Austin’s 1.3 and was better when it came to passing the ball, registering a 65% pass success rate, 7% more than his Southampton rival’s percentage (as per WhoScored).

Ultimately, based on the previous campaign anyway, Austin would probably represent a downgrade on Batshuayi.

Factor in the former Queens Park Rangers man’s injury record — missed 18 games in the 2017/18 season due to a hamstring injury and 26 in the 2016/17 season due to a shoulder injury (as per Transfermarkt) — and this looks like even more of a bad idea for Crystal Palace.

Finding the back of the net on 18 occasions for QPR in the 2014/15 Premier League campaign, Austin does obviously have previous when it comes to scoring in the top flight but, ultimately, he should be avoided for the reasons discussed.
