Crystal Palace fall behind in race to sign defender

The Crystal Palace fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate to see at least one defender come to Selhurst Park over the next few days…

After all, it has not been a very pleasant few months for the Eagles in the Tavern. Defeat after defeat, week after week – barring a miracle, it looks like relegation is looming for the London-based side.

However, in Sam Allardyce, they have one of the best managers in England when it comes to escaping relegation – and that has left many in the pub expecting a famous relegation escape this season.

It is clear, however, that Palace need to bring a few players in if they want to achieve success this year – and Allardyce knows it – but it would appear as though his quest to improve his side is not going to come easily.

According to the Evening Standard, Crystal Palace have fallen behind in their quest to land defensive veteran Patrice Evra – with French side Lyon reportedly steaming ahead of the Premier League outfit.

The Evening Standard note that Evra is keen to finish his career in his native France, meaning that Palace could well be his second-choice destination this month.

This has come as a blow to the Crystal Palace fans in the Transfer Tavern, many of whom thought that Evra fit the bill perfectly at Selhurst Park. It is clear that the Eagles are lacking leadership at the back, and given that Evra is 35-years-old and has won it all – he could have been perfect.

Significantly, the news come off the back of a failed attempt to sign Carl Jenkinson – and now Allardyce is seriously running out of time to get a deal done.
