Crystal Palace: Fans give response to new appointment

Crystal Palace fans have given a mixed response on Twitter to the news that former player and captain Shaun Derry has joined the club as a development coach.
The former Palace player has been part of arguably two of the Eagles’ most memorable spells since the millennium. He was part of the Palace side which got promoted to the Premier League in 2003/04 via the play-offs and was the captain when Palace survived in 2010, avoiding relegation from the Championship.
According to the club website, Derry’s work will see him work with the older age-group players aiming to ease the progression from development to senior football.
There’s been a mixed response from Palace fans, with many happy to see an icon come back to the club, while others are frustrated that it’s another incident of Palace employing a former player, with Dougie Freedman currently the Eagles’ sporting director, for example.
Here are some of the responses from both sides of the argument below…
What’s our obsession with former players

Makes me feel all dewy eyed as Derry gave us some fantastic times and was a trojan and true leader on the pitch.
Welcome back Shaun!

Palace fans, are you happy to have him back or do you think they should have appointed someone who wasn’t an ex-player? Have your say in the comments below.
