Crystal Palace: Fans react to Gary Cahill signing

Crystal Palace fans have reacted to news that Gary Cahill has signed a two-year deal with the club on Twitter.

Many fans seemed delighted that the former Champions League and Premier League winner will be joining the club, who recently just left Chelsea after his contract expired.

According to the Guardian, Cahill has joined the club on around £75,000-per-week, with Palace fighting off interest from Burnley, West Ham and Aston Villa for the centre-back.

The former England international has played 61 games for his country and played 191 games league games for Chelsea.

He told Palace’s official site: “I’m glad to be here, I think it’s a good opportunity for me to continue my career in the Premier League, and to play in a good, exciting team. There are some very exciting, talented players here. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

This is Palace’s third transfer of the summer after signing Stephen Henderson and Jordan Ayew and more business is expected at Selhurst Park, with a busy week ahead for Roy Hodgson, Steve Parish and sporting director Dougie Freedman.

Palace have been strongly tipped to sign Victor Camarasa (Evening Standard) from Betis and still have big movements to make in terms of replacing right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and striker Michy Batshuayi, who both have left the club after being there last season.

Palace fans seem to think it’s a good start to the busy week, though, and are happy with the added defensive option cover.

Memes and tweets flew into the Palace account who announced the deal, with one fan even joking that European success is on the horizon.
