Crystal Palace look to have done enough to earn themselves another year within the Premier League. The win against Newcastle United at the weekend should see Roy Hodgson’s side safe from the drop.
However, if the club do not address certain positions in the squad in the summer, they could be stuck in another relegation battle next season, where they may not be so fortunate.
The goalkeeping department could do with some improvement, and it appears the Eagles have their eyes on an international shot-stopper ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
What’s the News?
According to The Sun (7/4/19 print edition, page 61, via HITC Sport), Crystal Palace are believed to be leading the race for Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland.
It is claimed Everton are also interested in the shot-stopper, whilst a move to the Premier League could be on the cards this summer with the Potters unlikely to make the play-offs.
Signing Butland could be an excellent piece of business for Crystal Palace and should be considered as something the club should strongly look into.
The 26-year-old, who has been capped by England, has been impressive in the Championship for Stoke, although it does not appear to have been enough for them to make a return to the Premier League.
Butland has plenty of experience of playing in the top-flight and looked to be a really bright prospect during his early days with the Potters and is someone Hodgson knows well, having given him his England debut in 2012.
The ‘keeper would have to be considered as an upgrade on the likes of Vicente Guaita and Wayne Hennessey, as both men have been liable to making mistakes at crucial times in the season and have found it difficult to cement their place as the number one in the first-team.
And, with Jordan Pickford at Everton, a move to Selhurst Park may be the best destination for Butland to improve his career.
He would likely become the number one choice for Crystal Palace, which would then improve his chances of making a return to the England set-up in the future, rather than having to play second fiddle to the current national side’s ‘keeper at Goodison Park.
