Crystal Palace: Jairo Riedewald should be sold this summer

It is fair to say that this Jairo Riedewald experiment at Crystal Palace has not quite worked out.

The 22-year-old arrived at Selhurst Park back in 2017 during Frank de Boer’s short and disastrous reign and has made little impact in a red and blue shirt.

Riedewald is now being linked with a move away from Selhurst Park, with Fotomac (via Sport Witness) reporting that Besiktas have been offered the chance to sign him. And all things considered, a departure looks to be in everyone’s best interest.

A technical midfielder, it is almost certain that Riedewald will struggle to get into the side ahead of Luka Milivojevic and James McArthur once again next term, with Crystal Palace assistant manager Ray Lewington having spoken in the past about the team’s need for real energy in the middle of the park.

“He [Riedewald] is a really nice lad and a really good technician, but for us, he is not busy enough. He is very calm and that’s the way he has been brought up to play, I suppose,” Lewington was quoted as saying by Football.London last year.

“But the Premier League is a lot more frantic and sometimes a bit of composure does help, but you also need to be busy.”

Riedewald, of course, can also play in central defence, and with Mamadou Sakho suffering a serious injury last season and James Tomkins and Scott Dann not getting any younger, the Dutch youngster could be a decent cover option.

But again, Lewington, which probably means Roy Hodgson as well, is not entirely convinced by Riedewald, believing his future is solely in midfield be it at Crystal Palace or elsewhere.

“He played centre back a while ago and he has even had a go left back. He is a really nice lad, and I would say that he is a central midfield player, but in our opinion – and it is only our opinion – he is not as good as Luka [Milivojevic], which is the spot he is vying for.”

Based on that, alongside the fact that he did not make a single Premier League appearance last season, a transfer should surely be on the cards for the Netherlands international.
