Middlesbrough are reportedly plotting a bid to sign Crystal Palace defender Pape Souare this summer.
The same report also states that Middlesbrough are hopeful they can persuade Souare to ignore Premier League interest, with new manager Jonathan Woodgate convinced he can be an influential figure in his team’s defence.
Making just the sole appearance in the Premier League last season, a move to the Riverside or elsewhere is just what Souare needs this summer.
Dribbled past just 0.4 times per game in the previous campaign, Patrick van Aanholt has positioned himself nicely ahead of Souare in the left-back pecking order at Selhurst Park. To add some context, out of the left-backs in the Premier League to play more than 10 games, only Brighton’s Gaetan Bong was dribbled past less (as per WhoScored).
With Jeffrey Schlupp, who can also play at left-back (as shown on Transfermarkt), being available for selection as well, life does not get any easier for Souare at Crystal Palace.
When you consider all of that, Souare surely has to leave this transfer window if he wants to find regular playing time. And the Riverside looks like a place that could offer the Senegal international just that next season and possibly beyond.
Indeed, operating with a 3-4-2-1 formation 11 times last year, perhaps Souare can offer wing-back competition to the likes of George Friend, who was dribbled past the same amount of times last season in the second tier (0.3 per game) than the Senegal international was during his last full season as a Premier League operator, when he made 34 appearances in 2015/16.
