Crystal Palace were put to the sword by a rampant Spurs side yesterday, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men running out 4-0 winners.
All four goals came in the first half as Spurs punished Palace for the slightest lapses in concentration. Two goals from Son Heung-min, coupled with an own goal and a strike from Erik Lamela, ensured Spurs looked somewhere near back to their best after their collapse in the north London derby last time out.
However, for Palace manager Roy Hodgson, it was a tough day at the office as he saw his side struggle to live with the attacking play of last season’s Champions League finalists.
Hodgson, though, did find time to pick out one positive in the performance, as he told Palace’s official website following the game.
“The only real positive I can take from the game is that Mamadou Sakho, after such a long lay-off, such a long time out through injury, got through 90 minutes in a very, very tough game.
“So if you are looking for me to give some positives from a Crystal Palace point of view, I can’t come with anything other than that.” Hodgson said.
Sakho has been missing this season after picking up a serious knee injury towards the back end of last season.
The big defender will be hoping to cement a regular place back in the Palace XI after being regular last season up until his injury. He made 27 appearances as he became a key figure under Hodgson as Palace once again fought off relegation successfully.
Hodgson is being kind here trying to find some positives from a miserable day at the office, but he does have a point at least.
Sakho is key to how well Palace might do this season. His strength, power, and dominance in the air, traits of his highlighted by The Sun when he first arrived in England, could be huge for the Eagles at the back.
If he can keep fit and lean on the experience of Gary Cahill, then Palace might just have a solid central defensive partnership on their hands.
