Crystal Palace are just one Premier League club said to be keen on signing Gary Cahill this summer.
According to The Sun, Cahill, who was recently released by Chelsea following an eight-year spell in west London, is also attracting interest from both Leicester City as they seek a potential Harry Maguire replacement and West Ham.
But Roy Hodgson, who worked with Cahill during his time as England manager, is said to love the idea of bringing the 33-year-old to Selhurst Park on a free transfer.
Former club Aston Villa are also reported to be interested in their ex-player by The Sun, though the outlet states Cahill’s preference is to remain in London.
Crystal Palace could offer Cahill the chance to do just that, as well as the opportunity to continue playing Premier League football.
From the south London club’s perspective, though, they would probably be better off looking elsewhere. At 33, Cahill would only be a short-term option and Hodgson is already working with a trio of ageing central defenders.
Scott Dann is 32, James Tomkins is 30 and Mamadou Sakho turns 30 next year. On top of that, statistically, there is not much difference between the last two and Cahill.
For example, in the 2017/18 Premier League season, the last campaign Cahill played regularly in, the former England international averaged 1.1 tackles per game. In comparison, Tomkins made 1.2 and Sakho 0.9 last term (as per WhoScored).
As for interceptions, Sakho averaged 1.5 per game, Tomkins 1.2 and Cahill 1 in that final season under Antonio Conte.
So ultimately, as well as not being a long-term signing, Cahill would also not be an upgrade on two of Crystal Palace’s regular centre-backs if his stats are anything to go by.
