Simon Mignolet finished last season as a European champion, but it is hard to imagine the 31-year-old being completely satisfied with how the campaign went.
Bearing that in mind, a transfer away from Anfield now looks to be in Mignolet’s best interest. And Crystal Palace could be the perfect destination for him.
According to the Evening Standard, the south London club are interested in bringing Mignolet to Selhurst Park in a potential £8m deal that could help revive the Belgian’s career, something that is just not going to happen on Merseyside.
After the season he just had, a season where he was able to keep the most amount of clean sheets in the Premier League (21), you cannot see a scenario where Alisson relinquishes that spot between the sticks next term. He is Jurgen Klopp’s undisputed No.1.
Roy Hodgson, in contrast, does not appear to have one. He used both Wayne Hennessey (18 appearances) and Vicente Guaita (20 appearances) last campaign, as well as Julian Speroni (one appearance), giving Mignolet reason to be optimistic about becoming a regular again if he joins the Eagles.
That is, of course, if he can perform, something he often struggled to do at Liverpool.
“Simon Mignolet showed again today why Liverpool need to sign a goalkeeper. He is not decisive enough,” Jamie Carragher said back in 2017 following a 2-0 defeat against Hull City (as per Liverpool Echo).
If he wants to stay in the Premier League, though, and prove his critics wrong, then Selhurst Park could be the place to go.
