Everton have been targeting Christian Benteke as Romelu Lukaku’s replacement but the Crystal Palace striker has dismissed his potential departure which has subsequently left Eagles fans jumping for joy in the Tavern.
Lukaku joined Manchester United earlier this summer for £75 million and the Toffees have been looking for a replacement ever since. Fellow Belgian Benteke has ruled himself out the running with his eyes firmly on Crystal Palace, according to The Evening Standard.
“I want to be part of the project of the manager,” he said. “I want to perform and to score more goals and to really help the team to reach where they want to be.
“There is the World Cup and that is an important aspect of being with the club, and you have to perform to be part of that group.”
Benteke is Palace’s record signing at £27 million and the club are keen to keep him after a healthy return of 15 goals in 36 Premier League games last season.
Punters in the Tavern have been discussing his future as well, and at just 26 years old still everyone is in agreement that he is still yet to hit his peak.
Liverpool fans at the bar have also piped up in the discussion, suggesting that anyone that wears a Reds shirt is definitely not going to swap for an Everton one later in their career.
What do you think, Everton fans? Do you think Benteke is the suitable replacement for Lukaku?
