Crystal Palace: Why Reece James plan is a no-go

With Crystal Palace seemingly becoming more open to selling Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Manchester United this summer, the south London club could quickly find themselves dipping into the market to sign a replacement.

And one name they have been linked with since the Wan-Bissaka rumours first started to surface is Chelsea’s Reece James, with the Daily Mail reporting last month that the Eagles could be interested in doing a loan deal.

Should Wan-Bissaka actually end up leaving Selhurst Park this transfer window, even with James set to miss the start of the season due to an ankle injury, it would now not be a surprise to see Crystal Palace drum up their interest in the 19-year-old.

They are, however, likely to be unsuccessful in any potential pursuit. The Evening Standard reported back in April that the Blues were considering giving James a first-team spot following his impressive loan spell with Wigan Athletic. And with Davide Zappacosta, the current deputy to Cesar Azpilicueta in that right-back position, possibly heading for the Stamford Bridge exit door, that now looks certain to happen.

Chelsea, of course, cannot sign anyone in this or the next transfer window, meaning they will not be able to bring in a replacement for Zappacosta for the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

Furthermore, if the Italian does end up departing, James will undoubtedly have to be kept with no other real alternative to Azpilicueta.

That leaves any plans Crystal Palace had of signing the England youth international this summer in absolute tatters.
