Our Crystal Palace fans here in the Transfer Tavern are in a real state of shock this afternoon with the news that the Eagles have sacked Alan Pardew – confirmed on their official site.
The shock here has not been generated because they were not expecting such a move, in fact many could see it happening, it’s just the timing that has caught them by surprise.
The move comes just four days before Palace’s Boxing Day fixture against Watford but it is evident, according to our landlord at least, that a new manager is set to come in ready to do business in January when the window opens.
Who that is remains to be seen but they certainly have quite the job on whoever it may be.
The Eagles are just a point clear of the relegation zone this season after what’s been a shocking 2016 that has seen them by some margin be the worst team, form-wise, in the division.
Something had to budge eventually, then, and it’s Pardew who has been given the elbow at a time that’s meant to be full of good will.
The club chairman Steve Parish has released a statement surrounding Pardew’s departure that reads as follows:
“I would like to put on record our sincere gratitude for the tremendous service Alan has given us, both in his time here as manager and previously as a player.
“Following a fantastic second half of 2014/15, the 2015/16 season culminated in only narrowly missing out on winning the FA cup as well as securing our Premier League place for a record breaking fourth time.
“During his tenure Alan’s hard work and dedication were without question, he has improved so many areas of the club and we wish him the very best for the future.”
