Crystal Palace close to agreeing record-breaking deal for controversial marksman

The Crystal Palace fans who are playing darts in The Transfer Tavern this evening are discussing reports that the club are on the set to make a move for a new striker.

According to a report in the Express & Star, Alan Pardew’s side are set to meet West Bromwich Albion’s asking price for £20m-rated want away striker Saido Berahino.

The England under-21 international rejected the Baggies’ offer of a new four-year deal with last week after he had made his mind up his future would lie elsewhere.

The news was a bitter blow to Hawthorns boss Tony Pulis as the controversial marksman is one of just three strikers at the club, underlining his importance by scoring both goals in the club’s 2-1 over Vanarama North side Kidderminster at the weekend.

Eagles chief Alan Pardew is on the lookout for new striking options at Selhurst Park following the exits of both Emmanuel Adebayor and Dwight Gayle this summer.

A huge move for Liverpool’s Christian Benteke looks to be dead in the water, though a deal for Berahino would likely break the South London club’s transfer record.

Is Berahino worth the hype? Can Pardew get the best out of him?
