The Crystal Palace fans who are gathered at the bar in The Football Transfer Tavern are celebrating the signing of an England international, with a few early pints of TT Ale.
The Premier League side have confirmed that they have completed the deal to sign Andros Townsend from Newcastle United.
The 24-year-old has made the move to London for a fee of £13 million and joins Alan Pardew and the rest of the players, on a five-year-deal.
Townsend only made the move to Newcastle from Tottenham in January, scoring four times in 13 appearances, with his dazzling wing play making him a fan favourite at St James Park.
The news will be a bitter blow to Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez who was eager to build his team around the England international as they look for an immediate return to the Premier League following relegation last season.
Speaking of his delight at signing for Palace, Townsend told the official site: “I’m extremely delighted. I had chats with the manager and chairman before I signed and I’m pleased to a part of Crystal Palace’s future. By the sounds of things it’s going to be a bright one and I can’t wait to get started.”
The Palace fans in The Tavern are as equally delighted and can’t wait to see him in action at Selhurst Park next season.
Eagles fans what do you think? Is Townsend the perfect signing for Pardew or is it a hefty price tag for a player that couldn’t cut it at a top Premier League club? Let us know below…
