Crystal Palace: Decision to bring on James McCarthy baffled fans

Eyebrows have been raised at Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson by a portion of fans for his choice of substitution during their 1-0 loss versus Sheffield United.

Palace went down 1-0 to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane after John Lundstram bagged just after half-time, leaving the Eagles with an uphill battle to get back into the game and Hodgson with some thinking to do.

In the 65th minute, he made his first change: Max Meyer for Jeffrey Schlupp on the left side of midfield, yet it was his second change which got some Palace fans scratching their heads.

In the 70th, Andros Townsend – who brought six goals and four assists last season – was taken off for new signing James McCarthy, a central midfielder. Unsurprisingly, McCarthy wasn’t able to give Palace that attacking injection they needed – even if he did get stuck in, making 3 tackles and one interception, according to WhoScored.

When Palace announced the substitution on Twitter, lots of fans didn’t come across as particularly pleased, to say the least. Many couldn’t understand why Hodgson would remove one of the main attacking threats to replace him with a dogged central midfield player.

Here are some of their responses below…
