A lot of Crystal Palace fans are reacting to news unearthed by the club and posted on Twitter which argues that they could in fact be the world’s oldest football club still playing professionally.
Research by an author called Peter Manning has established that Crystal Palace can claim a link back to the Crystal Palace football team established in 1861, which played its first match in March 1862, via Crystal Palace. This has confused many linked with the club as it was previously believed that they were founded in 1905.
Fans of Non-League Sheffield FC will still be able to call themselves the oldest football club in the game as they were founded on October 24th 1857, via Sheffield FC.
However the fanbase of Notts County might not be happy with this latest news and it might cause a lot of debate, as they were founded in November 1862 and according to the Football Association, they are currently the oldest professional club.
More information on Palace’s claim can be found on their club website, Crystal Palace. The club’s faithful are excited to learn more whilst also finding some entertainment in the news, as one said: “Please can I get a refund for my 2005 centenary shirt?”
