Many Crystal Palace fans have responded on Twitter to the worrying news (per the Evening Standard) that right-back Joel Ward is out injured.
Roy Hodgson confirmed that the 30-year-old was the Eagles’ only current injury at the moment, though, regrettably, he has an argument for the player Palace can least afford to get injured.
Not because he is the best player in the squad. But rather the lack of options the club possesses in the right-back position. There is just one other who can naturally play on the right side of defence, and that is Martin Kelly, who has become much more accustomed to centre back in recent years. In fact, as per Transfermarkt, 53 of his 128 appearances for the South London outfit have come centrally.
It is the price that the club has to pay for not replacing Aaron Wan-Bissaka during the summer. Despite being linked to many players, sporting director Dougie Freedman decided against signing someone (Evening Standard), stating that they “needed to be patient”. However, patience or not, it is a big risk to just cross your fingers that Ward won’t get injured in the first half of the campaign.
Lots of fans responded to the news, with many sarcastically saying how lucky it is that they have a spare full-back, and one even asked if Victor Camarasa can play there.
Here are some of the responses below…
Oh wow thank god we have another Right Back…
Wait, we don't?
