Crystal Palace: Fans reminisce about signing Nigel Martyn -Crystal Palace

Many Crystal Palace fans have remembered the signing of club legend Nigel Martyn as it was recently the 30-year anniversary of his arrival.

When Martyn joined Palace in the first division, he became Britain’s first million-pound goalkeeper, costing them £1.35m, per Transfermarkt.

Bought by club legend Steve Coppell, Martyn went onto be a part of one of the Eagles’ most ever successful teams. In his initial season at the club, he was a part of the run in the FA Cup, where they managed to get to the final before losing to Manchester United in a replay at Wembley after a 3-3 draw in the original final. Furthermore, he was apart of their famous 4-3 win over First Division winners that season, Liverpool – who also embarrassed the Eagles 9-0 at Anfield earlier that campaign.

The season after that Coppel’s side took it up a gear in the league. In a team that boasted the quality of players such as Ian Wright, Mark Bright, John Solako, Geoff Thomas and more, they were able to reach third place in the First Division – the club’s highest ever position recorded as a football club, and they were able to win their biggest trophy to date – The Full Members Cup.

His part of that successful team has undoubtedly made himself be considered as a Palace legend. He racked up 272 appearances in the end, with many considering him the best ‘keeper to ever grace Selhurst Park, as well as 23 games for England, a figure some fans think should be much more.

Here are some tweets from Palace fans about the former number 1…
