Crystal Palace: Gabigol ‘waiting for something better’

Alleged Crystal Palace target Gabriel Barbosa could wait for a better move than the Eagles, according to reports.

Sport Witness have claimed that reports from Brazillian journalist Jorge Nicola say that due to the Inter Milan player being in such good form in Brazil, he may wait on the offer from Palace to go for something a level above.

The report says that Nicola had previously suggested this week that the Eagles still have a chance with Barbosa after there were suggestions he would join Flamengo full-time due to his great loan spell.

That looks to have now turned on its head though, with Barbosa likely to take his time to decide on a move, as at the moment he has only received approaches from Crystal Palace and Schalke. The Sport Witness story writes that he is “waiting for something better” and that he “believes he can get offers from bigger clubs before December”.

The forward has been in some form recently in Brazil. In the 2019 season for Flamengo, he has managed to score 27 goals in 33 games in both Serie A and the Libertadores – so perhaps it’s not surprising for him to be expecting offers from some big teams.

However, with Palace needing goals at this level, they may be better off spending their money elsewhere.

The forward’s record has been far better when in Brazil than in Europe – scoring just two goals in Europe; one for Benfica and one for Inter – and if he sees himself as better than Palace, they may want to get someone who they know can do it in this league.

Palace could benefit from taking a risk on Barbosa and it could pay off massively, but given their current circumstances and their desperate lack of a goalscorer, someone such as Michy Batshuayi or Olivier Giroud (linked to Palace via TEAMtalk) might suit more in the short-term.

The signing of Gabriel Barbosa might do a lot to excite Palace fans, but there isn’t enough evidence to suggest that this is a smart move.

Previous stories (Passione Inter via Sports Mole) have suggested he could cost in the region of £26.11m, and given the last £25m signing on a forward was Christian Benteke – who is having a torrid time at Palace in recent years – they will want to be more frugal with their cash in the future.
