Our Crystal Palace fans here in the Transfer Tavern were not too pleased with their club’s transfer window, right up until the point it emerged that Mamadou Sakho was on his way.
Indeed, it didn’t prove to be the most ground-breaking window for Palace this summer, with them hampered a bit by the dragged out appointment of Frank de Boer as manager.
The Dutchman, of course, did bring players in once he arrived with the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek perhaps the most impressive but what he really needed was that marquee signing to really get the fans onside and eventually, he arrived.
Hailed as one of the heroes of last season, Palace fans had been waiting all summer for Sakho to arrive from Liverpool and it finally happened on Deadline Day but now de Boer has to play to his strengths, or it will all be for nothing.
The Dutch manager clearly likes his teams to get the ball on the deck and play which is all well and good but not when you don’t really have the tools to do that.
None of Palace’s main defensive starters are what you’d call brilliant on the ball.
Sure, they can pass but asking them to knock it about like Franz Beckenbauer is a recipe for disaster and the same can be said if the Dutchman tries it with Sakho – another player not brilliant with his feet.
The Frenchman was signed because he’s a wall of a defender, not a sprayer of passes and the Eagles have to use that or things will come undone quickly.
