Crystal Palace supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the 2018/19 Premier League season, what with their team seeking to improve upon their decent 11th place finish last time round.
Roy Hodgson’s men looked to be heading only one way after losing their opening seven league matches, but the former England chief deserves enormous credit for steering the ship and leading the Eagles to 44 points from their final 31 games to eventually finish 11 points clear of danger. Thus, it’s clear that this Palace team has the quality to challenge for a top half finish this term, although some additions will be needed if Hodgson is to take the London club into the division’s top ten.
And many of our resident Palace fans have been showing intrigue at recent reports suggesting that Tottenham are interested in signing winger Ante Rebic from Eintracht Frankfurt, who netted for Croatia in their 3-0 thumping of Argentina in the World Cup on Thursday night.
And were the 24-year-old to indeed make the move to North London, Erik Lamela is one man who could suffer from his arrival, which is why these recent reports should prompt Palace into moving for the £18 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the Argentina international struggled for regular gametime under compatriot Mauricio Pochettino last season upon return from a year-long stint out with a hip injury, with the 26-year-old earning just seven Premier League starts for Spurs.
And with just a few goals and a handful of assists to show for his endeavours, Lamela is unlikely to push the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, and Son Heung-min out of the starting eleven this season, while his position in the pecking order is likely to suffer further if highly-rated Rebic makes the move to North London.
And with reports suggesting that Palace could be willing to sell winger Andros Townsend this summer, Hodgson must seek to capitalise on Spurs’ reported interest in Rebic to lure Lamela to Selhurst Park.
Yes, Lamela wasn’t quite at his best last term, but one mustn’t forget that, prior to injury back in October 2016, the Argentine was beginning to hit his best form in a Tottenham shirt in scoring 11 goals and laying on ten assists for the club in the 2015/16 campaign, before starting the following season with two goals and seven assists before injury ended his campaign just a few months in.
And while Townsend wasn’t always at his best for the Eagles last season, the England international still managed two goals and nine assists in all competitions, and as such will surely need replacing if he does indeed return to Newcastle United – Lamela could be that man.
As such, with reports linking Spurs with a move for winger Rebic, Palace must seek to take advantage by making a move for Lamela, who could well be the ideal replacement for linked-away Townsend at Selhurst Park.
