Crystal Palace have performed remarkably since Roy Hodgson took charge of the club earlier in the season, with the Eagles now a comfortable five points clear of the bottom three.
Fans here in The Transfer Tavern have now afforded themselves the luxury of looking forward rather than over their shoulders, but told our landlord during a darts tournament that they were still keen to see Hodgson strengthen the squad this month to ensure they are not sucked back into the relegation mix. Although not a new signing, news emerged halfway through the tournament from The Daily Mail, which suggested that Hodgson is set to be active in the coming days, by offering midfielder Yohan Cabaye a new deal.
The Frenchman has just six months remaining on his current terms, and Hodgson is keen to tie the former Newcastle United and Paris St Germain man to a new one-year deal. The 32-year-old is now able to discuss a deal with foreign clubs over a potential free transfer in the summer, but with Hodgson considering the offer of a new one-year deal with the option of a further years extension, the player has a decision to make in the coming weeks.
Landlord’s Verdict: Although Cabaye hasn’t been at his best this season, the player remains an important part of this Crystal Palace squad. His experience in the middle will remain essential to the progression of Hodgson’s side, and the former England boss is moving now to ensure the player does not feel undervalued by the club.
Cabaye is young enough to rediscover his form, and could certainly emerge as a key cog in the coming months, as Palace look to break into the top half of English football’s highest tier.
