The Crystal Palace fans are deeply concerned in the Transfer Tavern due to rumours linking Wilfried Zaha with a move away from the club this summer.
The resident Eagles lining up our bar in the tavern are no strangers to rumours linking Zaha with a move away from the club, but that has not prevented them from worrying about the latest report emerging this week. According to The Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a £40 million bid to lure Zaha away from Selhurst Park this summer, but Palace are holding out for much more than the quoted price.
Considering how pivotal Zaha is to Palace’s success, it is easy to understand why their valuation is higher than what Spurs are willing to offer. The Eagles have failed to take a single point from the 9 matches which Zaha has missed through injury this season, so his importance to the club simply cannot be expressed highly enough.
Following a recent knee injury, the 25-year-old winger made his full return to first-team action against Huddersfield last Saturday and inspired his side to a priceless 2-0 victory over their fellow-relegation rivals. Zaha’s telling contribution to Palace’s victory further underlined his importance to the clubs aspirations, but the South-London outfit may be forced to sell him this summer due to his personal desire to embark on a new challenge.
Losing a player of Zaha’s quality would undoubtedly be a bitter blow for the club to take, but they should consider selling him to Tottenham if they are able to get Erik Lamela in return. Lamela is a different player to Zaha as he does not possess the same level of pace and trickery to utilise in the final-third, but the Argentinian is still a fantastic player who has plenty to offer the club across a variety of positions.
Roy Hodgson may have to be pragmatic this summer if Zaha expresses a desire to leave the club, even if the idea of selling Palace’s prize asset to a Premier League rival deeply disappoints him. A cash plus Lamela deal for Zaha’s services would represent an excellent piece of business for The Eagles, and unless Spurs are willing to offer Lamela as part of the deal, they should decline any forthcoming cash-only offers.
