According to HITC, reporting via Italian publication Calciomercato, Crystal Palace are targeting Genoa’s Diego Laxalt this summer.
Laxalt, who plays his football in Serie A, has impressed at the Word Cup in Russia as part of the Uruguay squad that reached the quarter-final stage.
The left-back didn’t begin the tournament as a starter, but once he got into the favoured XI he never looked back, turning in some excellent performances against Russia and Portugal.
The 25-year-old would be an exciting addition to Crystal Palace’s squad. The Selhurst Park faithful will be excited to see if Laxalt can translate his World Cup form to the arena of the Premier League.
Should the Genoa man arrive in South London though, it may well mean that one of the club’s current left-back options is forced to move on to pastures new.
Pape Souare has had a tough time recently. In 2016 he was involved in a traffic collision which put him out of action for a full 11 months. Upon his return to fitness, Patrick van Aanholt had made the left-back berth his own, with back up provided by Jeffrey Schlupp.
Having lost his place in the first team, and having been out with injury for so long, a move to a side where he can compete for more minutes may well be the best thing now for the 28-year-old. Even if that does necessitate a drop down to the Championship.
Transfermarkt value the Senegal international at £3 million, but considering that he has been out of the first team frame for a long time and is entering the final year of his contract, Palace may be willing to let him go for less than that figure.
That price tag puts Souare within the financial reach of West Brom. Darren Moore will be desperate to bring defensive reinforcements to the Hawthorns following the exodus of players the Baggies have endured this summer.
Kieran Gibbs is the only remaining left-back on the books any West Brom, and his own future is far from certain.
If Moore could lure Souare to West Brom for a good price it would represent a great start to the rebuild of his back line. It would also give the left-back a much needed chance to get his career going again.
